Iron & Steel Hall of Fame
Joseph Wharton
Augustus Wolle

Born-Died: 1821-1878

Location: Bethlehem, PA

Site/Company: Bethlehem Iron Company & Bethlehem Steel Company

Historical Significance:

Joseph Wharton was an American industrialist, involved in manufacturing, mining, and education.

In the 1870s, Wharton bought into Bethlehem Iron Company.  He invested much time and energy into the company, but was not involved in the day-to-day operations.  He eventually purchased a controlling share in the company.

In 1886, Wharton visited England and France to research designs for a plant to forge higher quality steel.  With those designs, Bethlehem Iron Company built the first plant to forge high-strength steel in America.

Wharton was a co-founder of Bethlehem Steel Company.  He sold the company in 1901, but retained extensive iron and coal mines and refining works.

Wharton founded both Swarthmore College and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
