Iron & Steel Hall of Fame
Thomas & John Potts
Born-Died: Thomas, 1680-1752 John Sr., 1710-1768

Location: Pennsylvania

Site/Company: Colebrookdale Furnace, Mt. Pleasant Furnace, Pine Forge, Warwick Furnace, Pottsgrove Forge, Mt. Joy Forge, and others

Historical Significance:

Thomas Potts and his son, John Potts, Sr., created the largest iron making empire in colonial America.  Their empire was built upon their knowledge of iron making, sound business decisions, and the contributions of relatives.  Thomas began his family’s involvement with iron by acquiring shares of Colebrookdale Furnace and Pine Forge.  John Sr. grew the empire around the profitable Warwick Furnace, which allowed him to purchase interest in other works.  By 1750, John was Pennsylvania’s leading ironmaster.  He established Pottsgrove and later, Pottstown was named after this family.
