Historical Significance:

Augustus Wolle founded what became Bethlehem Steel Corportation, once America's second largest steel producer (after U.S. Steel) and a leading producer of steel for the construction, railroad, and shipbuilding industries.

Wolle was a prominent Moravian merchant in Bethlehem and a shareholder in the Thomas Iron Company. On April 8, 1857, Wolle procured the incorporation of the Saucona Iron Company, which made iron rails. 

Directed to purchase the Saucona Iron Company from Wolle, Robert Sayre then transformed it into the "Bethlehem Rolling Mills and Iron Company." In 1860, the name was changed to Bethlehem Iron Company, which eventually became part of Bethlehem Steel Corporation.
