Iron & Steel Hall of Fame
George Taylor

Born-Died: 1716-1781

Location: Bucks County

Site/Company: Warwick Furnace & Durham Furnace

Historical Significance:

George Taylor was born in Ireland and immigrate to America in his twenties.  Upon his arrival, he found employment with Samuel Savage, owner of Warwick Furnace. Taylor started as a manual labor but became a clerk.  After Savage died, Taylor assumed operations of Warwick Furnace in 1741.

He left in 1752 and entered a partnership in operating the Durham Furnace, which became the first iron works to supply cannon balls for the Continental troops and produced the "Durham Boat," which Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware River in December 1776.  Iron production was Taylor's lifetime concern.

He was elected to the provincial assembly for Pennsylvania in 1764 and was a member of various early American governmental committees.  Although he did not vote on the Declaration of Independence, Taylor did sign it.  He served Congress through 1777.
