Historical Significance: Hussey, Wells, & Company was the first firm in America to successfully make crucible steel. The crucible steelmaking process allowed for stronger steel than previous processes. Crucible steel, a hard and strong type of steel, was often used in tools, especially those used to manufacture steels.
