Rebecca Webb Lukens was a woman well ahead of her time. During the early 1800’s when women were traditionally wives and mothers, Rebecca Lukens fulfilled the last wish of her dying husband by running their rolling mill. In so doing, she secured her place in U.S. history as the first female industrialist. It was Rebecca who became the driving force behind the company which eventually became known as Lukens Steel.
The Rebecca Lukens Award was established by the Graystone Society to honor individuals who exhibit the qualities of Rebecca Lukens: resilience, leadership, courage, and strategic outlook. The award is on display in the lobby of the Lukens Executive Office Building.
