SS United States on the Move
Follow the SS United States on its way to Mobile, Alabama. It will be sunk off the coast of Destin, Florida in hopes of becoming a destination for scuba divers and attract fish and other wildlife as a reef. It won't be the only shipwreck habitat they have. The ship was built in Newport, Virgina, and finished in 1951. her maiden voyage was July 3, 1952. She holds the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing both East and West-bound. She was the largest passenger ship built by the Unites States weighing 53,000 tons. She carried 1,928 passengers and 1,044 crew. She was also able to be carry 14,000 troops times of war. The SS United States was built using significant amounts of Lukens Steel.
