Ships have served prominently in American warfare, most notably in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and later conflicts. The main purposes of marine warfare include controlling ports and harbors, and therefore, supplies, and controlling movement of troops along waterways, and engaging in massive naval battles with enemy fleets.
