#3 Open Hearth

Aerial View of Open Hearth #3 in 1919 – In order to meet the increased production demands caused by the war, Lukens Steel Company had to expand its steelmaking capacity.  This was achieved with the addition of Open Hearth #3, which had eight 100-ton furnaces.  The company then operated 24 furnaces with a capacity of more than 500,000 tons of steel.
